1-20/1-21 Preparation for in-class essay- FInal discussion

Lesson:
We looked at the following questions about :
Night Final Discussion:

1)Why do you think Elie Wiesel begins his story with Moshe at the Beadle?
What lessons does the narrator seem to learn from Moshe's experiences in telling his own story?

2) How did the relationship between Elie and his father develop? What prompts the changes in their relationship? Why did Elie include the stories about the Rabbi and his son and the fight over the bread?
How does this relationship affect the way Eliezer sees himself as an individual?

3) How does Elie’s relationship with god change? Why does Elie Wiesel direct his anger at god rather than at the Nazis? Is there such a thing as a benevolent (an all good) god? What do you think his position might be on the subject today?

4) What does the memoir tell us about human nature?

5) Explain how the Nazis dehumanize their prisoners. What are some examples of ways that the prisoners tried to hold on to their identity even in a place where it seemed impossible?

6) A memoir is a historical account or biography written from personal knowledge or special sources. How accurate are our memories? What responsibility does the author have toward the reader? How do you analyze a memoir?

7) This book uses some writing techniques to tell Elie Wiesel’s story. Describe what each of these are and give an example of ho Elie uses these in the book.

Foreshadowing

Irony

Metaphor

8) What are some words that took on an entirely different meaning in Night?

9) The original title of Night was And the world has remained silent. Which title do you prefer and why?

10) Nobel Peace Prize introduction of Elie Weisel:
“His mission is not to gain the world’s sympathy for the victims or the survivors. His aim is to awaken our conscience. Our indifference to evil makes us partners in the crime. This is the reason for his attack on indifference and his insistence on measures aimed at preventing a new holocaust. We know that the unimaginable has happened. What are we doing now to prevent its happening again?”
Can literature help avert another holocaust & is that the purpose of the literature we’ve read?

We then went over the criteria for the final paper (this can be found on the assignments page). We will have an in-class essay next class.

HMWK:
